USC Climbing Club Second Beginner Trip Info
Please read the entire e-mail in detail or you may miss details that prevent you from coming!
Our second beginner trip will take place Sunday (9/21). As a reminder, there is a mandatory meeting the Thursday (9/18) before (7:30pm at the Lyon Center rock wall) to discuss the details of the beginner trip on that Sunday (~8am~2pm on site). The Thursday meeting is absolutely mandatory as we must ensure everyone knows how to put on a harness, know how to tie in and belay properly, fill out waiver forms, etc. The beginner trip is located in Point Dume, Malibu and there are $10 dues to participate in the trip. If you have your own gear please bring it, however we do have gear that people can borrow in case you do not own any. All remaining details will be discussed at the mandatory meeting. If anyone has any questions, please contact myself, one of the other officers or e-mail the climbing club e-mail account directly (climb@usc.edu).
To go on the beginner trip, you MUST attend the mandatory meeting the Thursday before. There are no exceptions to this rule, regardless of last minute incidents that may occur. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, however there has been high demand for these trips and due to the limited amount of people we can bring this is in part why we require it (The primary reason is safety education which you will learn about at the meeting).
To go on the beginner trip, you MUST bring the $10 dues in cash at the mandatory meeting. There are also no exceptions to this rule.
The trip begins at 8AM at Point Dume. This means we typically meet locally at 7AM to depart and arrive at 8AM. WE DO NOT MEET AT 8AM LOCALLY. If you show up late, you will be left behind.
The trip is truly a beginner trip. If you are an intermediate to advanced climber, be warned that we only setup routes on 5.6, 5.7, and 5.8 routes on this trip. Therefore if you have experience, we kindly request you do not go on the beginner trip to allow those with little or no experience to be exposed to climbing. On a side note, these climbs will most likely be boring and a waste of time for experienced climbers anyway.
One other important note, please only come if you are serious about joining the club and climbing. Also, we're not here to teach people how to climb, the club is for networking (i.e. finding people to climb with, and organizing trips), so if you were expecting some private coaching, I’m sorry. The reason for this is that it is unfair to our veteran climbers if they have to spend all their time teaching instead of climbing themselves. That being said, if you have little or no experience but are truly interested and devoted to learning the sport, there are ways to learn/pick up what you need to know and to develop your own technique along the way.
Thanks again and I look forward to seeing you next Thursday/Sunday!
Jeff
